Precision Agriculture on Indian Farms: Where to Start

30 April 20267 min readBy the KVR Global Solutions team

Precision agriculture pays back fastest when it is adopted in the right order. Start with measurement, not machinery.

Step one: measure the soil

Grid soil testing costs little and immediately exposes variability that flat-rate fertiliser application is wasting money on. This is almost always the highest-return first move.

Step two: schedule irrigation

Soil-moisture sensors paired with basic scheduling reduce both water use and disease pressure. On horticulture plots the water saving alone typically funds the hardware within two seasons.

Step three: imagery and machinery

Drone or satellite imagery is genuinely useful once you already have soil and moisture data to interpret it against. Variable-rate machinery comes last, and only at scale where the acreage justifies it.
